En esta obra de madurez, Spaemann aborda el amor benevolente como base genuina de la vida lograda y de lo que precede a cualquier deber. De ese amor derivan actitudes éticas fundamentales, como el respeto, el trato cuidadoso, la veneración o el perdón. La conciencia ecológica (responsabilidad ante uno mismo, ante los animales o la naturaleza) halla también aquí su fundamento sólido, que evita una relación exclusivamente técnica con el mundo. El modo de percibir bien la realidad se encuentra en la benevolencia hacia los demás y hacia uno mismo. ROBERT SPAEMANN (Berlín, 1927), se doctoró en 1952 con Joachim Ritter, en la Universidad de Münster. Tras un brillante historial académico en Sttutgart, Heidelberg y Munich, fue galardonado en 2001 con el Premio Karl Jaspers. Sus libros han sido traducidos a más de catorce lenguas, y versan sobre historia de las ideas modernas, filosofía de la naturaleza, antropología, ética y filosofía política. Está considerado como uno de los grandes filósofos alemanes de la actualidad.
